Press Release:
Washington, D.C. — De Novo Gallery is proud to present its next Window Project exhibition, Heat Wave, featuring work by artist Lindsay McCulloch, on view starting Friday, July 31, 2026 at 465 K Street NW, Washington, DC in Mount Vernon Triangle. For this exhibition, McCulloch extends her practice onto the architecture of the space itself, painting a mural directly onto the gallery's walls and hanging works from the exhibition against it. This marks the first time a Window Project installation has paired a site-specific mural with framed work.
The Exhibition
This series of work by Lindsay McCulloch explores themes of femininity, craft, motherhood, ego, memory, and nature through abstract painting and mixed media work. McCulloch combines everyday materials such as paper, yarn, ribbon, thread and fabric with more traditional painting. These objects have a history tied to female craft and domestic work that often goes unrecognized. Painting, by contrast, is traditionally tied to the individual artist's authorship and their self-expression. By bringing the two together, McCulloch creates a natural tension in her work. She responds to her materials intuitively, and the deeper meaning of each piece usually reveals itself through the act of making it.
For this installation, titled Heat Wave, McCulloch has brought that same intuitive, hands-on process to the walls themselves. The mural's design grew out of two pieces from this series, chosen to tie the installation together visually. As with the rest of her work, the title came to McCulloch spontaneously during the process rather than as something she planned in advance. She designed the mural during a heat wave this summer, and once the title came to her, she didn't question it. Trusting that instinct is central to how she works and it felt natural to extend the mural’s title to the overall exhibition.
