Journal
In the Journal series, I am exploring the juxtaposition of objects such as paper, yarn, ribbon, thread and fabric with a more formal painting language. These objects have a history tied to female craft and unacknowledged labor, whereas gestural painting often carries performative connotations based in ego and individualism. The meshing of the two different languages creates an exciting tension point for me to explore contradictory impulses. I respond to my materials intuitively, and the deeper meaning of each piece usually reveals itself through the creative process. The series title, Journal, reflects this discovery of deeper preoccupations through the automatism of making.
